Joss Has Not Declared The End Of Firefly
It made next-to-no splash when it first surfaced three days ago, but suddenly websites everywhere are parroting an Entertainment Weekly article which asserts that Joss declared "the Firefly saga has reached its conclusion."
That panic-inducing declaration has found its way to Slashdot, Digg, and an increasing number of weblogs.
Here's the problem: There's no indication that Joss has ever said any such thing.
In fact, in recent weeks, he's stuck to pretty much the same story. First, any theatrical (or even television) follow-ups to Serenity pretty much are dependent upon the DVD sales, and he certainly has other stories to be told. Second, if no one ever greenlights a theatrical (or even television) follow-up, Serenity as a film and as a continuation of Firefly does provide some sense of closure.
Myself, I suspect that Joss' recent use of the term "closure" is what led EW to the notion that Joss was done with the Verse.
(And none of this even addresses the fact that he's already mentioned doing at least one more story in comic book form, further showing that he's not finished yet.)
For the time being, I suggest tracking the story on WHEDONesque, where people are busily debunking the EW spin.
So if you happen to run into people taking this EW story's claims at face value, please point them in the right direction(s) so we can head off any mass distress amongst Browncoats everywhere.
Update: Barely five minutes after posting this (if that), Joss posted a message to the WHEDONesque thread mentioned above. Click through to get the final word on the matter. In part: "EW is a fine rag, but they do take things out of context."
But, of course, as is always the case when Joss posts somewhere, that does it nothing resembling justice. Like I said, click through, read, enjoy.
